Our method

Upper cervical care, in plain words

Upper cervical chiropractic is care for the two vertebrae at the top of the neck, the atlas and the axis.

Some chiropractors adjust the whole spine. We work at the top of the neck only, and only when the exam finds a reason. Both are chiropractic care; this page says what ours is.

  • One doctor examines you at every visit

  • One correction at a time, never several

  • A recheck before the next correction

The exam

What an upper cervical exam involves

Five parts, in this order.

  • A talk about you

Your history, what brought you to a chiropractor and what you hope care will do. You decide how much to share.

  • A seated posture check

Your doctor looks at how you hold your head and shoulders while you sit and stand.

  • Hands-on checks of the upper neck

Your doctor feels how the top two vertebrae and the muscles around them move, and compares one side with the other.

  • Imaging, only when medically necessary

Not every patient needs it. If your doctor thinks imaging is medically necessary, they say why, what it will show and who will read it, and you can decide.

  • A review of what we found

Your doctor explains the findings and whether upper cervical care fits you, or whether you should see another provider first.

Limits

What the method does not claim

We would rather say it here than have you find out later.

  • No promised results

Results vary and we make no promise about how you will feel or how many visits you will need.

  • No claims about conditions

We make no claim that this method treats, helps or prevents any condition.

  • No replacement for medical care

A chiropractor is not your physician. If your doctor finds something that needs medical care, they send you there first.

Risks

What your doctor tells you before a neck adjustment

Every kind of care has risks, and this page is where ours are named.

  • Soreness

Soreness, stiffness or tiredness after a correction is common and usually short.

  • Rare serious problems

Rare serious problems, including injury to an artery in the neck, have been reported after neck adjustments. Your doctor explains this before any neck adjustment.

  • Your say

You can ask questions, pause or stop at any point. A correction is made only with your agreement.
